Kovalchuk to play it safe in Atlanta

09:56 AM ET 11.22 | Look for winger Ilya Kovalchuk to remain with the Atlanta Thrashers on a deal that could be in excess of 10 years with an average of more than $9 million US per season. League sources say while Kovalchuk and agent Jay Grossman have held off on agreeing to a deal, discussions with Thrashers general manager Don Waddell have been "favourable." The belief is that Kovalchuk doesn't want the pressure of playing in a market where he's going to face questions.

Who didn't see this coming, he said that it is either Atlanta or the KHL for him.

A lot of Europeans don't like changing cities and like to stay with the team that drafted them, especially Swedes (I know Kovalchuck is Russian, just saying).

Who say the Kovalchuck fight last night? It was a solid fight. I think it was his third of his career too, once against Ian White, again against Avery, and then last night against Cooke.

Good decision by him to stay. The team around him as been awful for most of a decade, but now finally have some nasty young players who can support him. Why leave now?

Atlanta will trade him to Boston at the trade deadline for Bergeron. He'll then get re-united with Savard and go on to score 75 goals per year while Savard racks up 100 assists per year.

Before neither of them resign and they both come to Toronto!

I saw the fight, and I also saw Kovalchuck act kind of like a baby when the game wasn't going his way (btw, calls were definitely in favor of the Thrashers the whole night). Personally, I have always been a fan of his, but was highly disappointed in his behavior last night. Not the fighting. He did what he thought he had to do with that one with Cooke, but overall, he acted like a boob.

I'd hate to see what you'd have said about the refs if your Pens lost...

They almost did. What's your point? The Thrashers had opportunity after opportunity to win the game. I call it how I see it, and I say what's on my mind. If you knew me well enough, and obviously you don't, I don't blame refs, injuries, etc. for losses. It isn't my style, and it isn't who I am or how I post (unlike others). However, I only bring up the refs to make a point about Kovalchuck, who I SAID I HAPPEN TO LIKE, but acted like a boob last night.

And P.S. Kovalchuk is entitled to have "boobish" moments once in awhile. All I said is that I was a bit disappointed in seeing it.

November 22, 2009  12:25 PM ET

Kovalchuk is the middle class version of Ovie so this is very good that they have him for longer!

No need to apologize...clearly i was joking.

Why SHOULD he fuss? The Atlasta Thresholders ain't gonna be south of the M/D Line, except to visit ( if there's even one franchise still down there, that is) in the very near future, anyway. That, and they will continue to pay him a lot more than any athlete's actually worth to any sports organization.
