Did MLB dictate All-Star pitching?

07:59 AM ET 07.17 | On Monday, Brian Fuentes said he was told he would pitch the sixth inning of the All-Star game. On Tuesday, he was told he would not, which Fuentes blamed on the commissioner's office. "That bumped me from my inning," Fuentes said. "It's kind of crazy they would have their hand in making up the lineup." Fuentes, the Angels' closer, did not pitch in the game. He said he was told in an American League team meeting Monday that he would pitch the sixth inning, and he shared that news with family, friends and Angels officials in St. Louis. On Tuesday, two hours before game time, Fuentes said AL pitching coach Jim Hickey told him that there had been a "misunderstanding" and that AL Manager Joe Maddon had not been aware that the commissioner's office wanted the starting pitchers to work two innings. That left one fewer inning for the relievers and that left Fuentes out. "To think that someone in MLB would dictate who pitches when and where, that is not the way the game is supposed to be played," Fuentes said.

Just another EXHIBITION game shouldn't determine who has home field advantage. You play the longest season in sports just reward the team with the best record.

he should go cry about it.

Wakefield makes his first asg at age 42 and you don't see him complaining that he didn't pitch.

July 17, 2009  08:21 AM ET

MLB is afraid to have another game that goes to extra innings and a team runs out of pitchers. certain pitchers end up as "emergency" guys and will only pitch if it goes extra innings

July 17, 2009  08:28 AM ET

wa wa wa i didn't get to pitch in the 6th inning of an exhibition game wa wa wa. Is it just me or is the all star break the worst week of baseball all season? no real games on, the AL beats the NL, Some guy from the royals shows up, and they spend more time bickering about who got snubbed, who should have played *cough Tim Wakefield cough* and you know a game is usless when most of the comentary leading up to it about how to make it relavent again. The all-star game started before television and it was built for that era. Before you could order MLB packages on your cable box and whatch whoever you wanted whenever you wanted, the all star game was designed to allow the members of one city a year exposure to the best players in the league. You know why the Fans didn't vote back then? because most of them didn't have the capabilities to track players from another town. The all-star game was created for a pre TV world, it won't ever be relevent. Why whatch 1 game with all the all-stars when you can whatch 30 games a night and catch anything you missed on SC the next morning. lets eliminate the game all together, the fans can still vote for an all-star team, the ballots can be counted in october so they will actually reflect a season of work, players who get voted in can play an exhibition game for charity during the off season. Make up the lost revenues by adding 2 games to the schedule for ALL MLB teams. Make baseball more money and gets rid of this usless exhibition that interupts real baseball whatching.

The real question is why would anyone care if they don't get into the game? Take the night off and have a good time. Joke around with people in the bullpen. Don't waste your time going out there. The fans don't care about the game so why should you go out there and "try" (actually is anyone really trying in that game)?

Listen if they told you that you were going to pitch and then said you weren't because of some "misunderstanding" you would be pissed. If it's an exhibition baseball has no right to influence who plays and who doesn't.

it's a crock that Wakefield didn't get to pitch in his first all star game at the ripe old age of 42.

July 17, 2009  08:54 AM ET

Interleague play should determine home field advantage in the playoffs. Imbalanced schedules, differences in the quality in the leagues and divisions make "best record" a fallacy. There are 250+ games between the leagues each year, whoever wins that deserves home field.

The Dodgers are 30 and 12 agaianst NL West opponents this year, does any serious minded baseball oberver think they would have that record in the AL East. The AL East has arguably the 3 best teams in baseball in their division and could end up with 1 playoff team. Absurd.

July 17, 2009  08:56 AM ET

As for Fuentes, what's unfair is each year 5, 6, 7 closers are chosen for the All Star team. There are 70 starters in the AL and 14 closers, why 50% of the pitchers on the All Star team are 1 inning pitchers is beyond unfair. Yes, it's becasue All Star pitcher tend to pitch one inning, but starters deserve the recognition, after all, if a closer had been any good as a starter he never would have been moved to the bullpen.

Honestly though ... who could seriously catch Wakefield's knuckleball? No one but his catcher in Boston.

I'm a big Wakefield fan, great guy. That said I am sure he was thankful being there, with a 4.31 era he was lucky to be chosen, more deserving pitchers were overlooked.

Joe Mauer has experience catching a knuckleballer (R.A. Dickey)

And Doug Mirabelli.

July 17, 2009  09:24 AM ET

If thisis the case then they definetly shouldnt tie this game to the Series...

July 17, 2009  09:47 AM ET

Fuentes should be happy he got picked. Some guys have great careers and never get picked. The home field advantage thing is bull. That should be decided by the best record in the regular season. The game never mattered. I've been watching baseball for 43 years since I was 7 years old and even back then the game did not matter to most of the players. Only a few played hard, Pete Rose for example. He got a lot of heat after the Ray Fosse incident for trying so hard in the All Star Game. If that play had happened in the regular season no one would have faulted him. For the most part it was just a fun exhibition. In fact they used to pick guys at the end of their careers that did not deserve to be there such as Mantle and Mays, just to honor them. The only reason they have this push to make it relevant is because of Selig and his stupid tie game in Milwaukee.

July 17, 2009  09:50 AM ET

I really don't give a good sheet who pitched as long as the American League continues their "mastery" of that other league !!!
