07:48 AM ET 05.27 | As the Cubs await Major League Baseball's investigation into Ted Lilly's incident with plate umpire Bob Davidson, manager Lou Piniella said he only expects a fine to be levied. Davidson sent his report to the league on the incident in which Lilly jumped over the dugout fence and onto the field to argue after being ejected for loudly disputing balls and strikes. Davidson said Lilly was thrown out for yelling about his calls. "There was no contact," Davidson said. "We never came close, on his part or mine. And everything he said to [the media] was bull. Everything I read in the paper that he said was untrue. He never said one of those words. What he said to me, you couldn't print in the paper."

ted lilly...mediocre pitcher

May 27, 2009  09:07 AM ET

Lilly certainly seems to have a bit of a temper issue

May 27, 2009  09:12 AM ET

Well, the last two seasons for the Cubbies, he has been above mediocre by going 15-8 and 17-9 respectively. And why are umps such babies these days???

May 27, 2009  09:16 AM ET

Baseball was much better back in the day when umpires were credible and remained in the background. I remember when the only thing notable about them was maybe a unique way of barking out a strike. Any ump that follows a player or manager back to the dugout trying to prolong an argument should be banished from MLB.

I'm with you, axe. Some of these umps are either incompetent, biased, hot heads, or a combination thereof. It doesn't matter which one of these negative qualities they have. People like that do not deserve to be in the league. Simple as that. Besides, considering some of the calls these guys make, they deserve a good tongue lashing. Prime example of this: The incident where that jackass ump tossed Bradley for arguing a horribly bad strike call. Anyone with even half a brain could see that not only was that VERY clearly a ball, but it was also ball 4. ****, that wasn't even the only bad call in that series. There were at the very least 3 horrendous calls.

On another note, if an ump followed me to the dugout, and continued to yell at me, I would knocked his ass out. It's bad enough that the ump would have violated my personal space. But to follow me to my own dugout? That's where the ump would really cross the line.

Once again, all the media is looking for is "sensationalism"!

May 27, 2009  11:06 AM ET

Why can't umpires get fined or suspended for bad calls or for inciting players? Not just Cubs, but all players? This is the reason I hate umpires.

May 27, 2009  11:13 AM ET

Lily is one of the calmest guys ive ever seen..he has that maddux temper...so idk what you guys are watching...

you obviously havent seen many cubs games. last year he threw his glove down in a fit of rage after giving up back to back homers against the cardinals last year and everyone was SHOCKED that he got that angry...he never shows any anger...or happiness...you didnt see him when we celebrated the division crown last year did you? the stalest face you'll ever see while popping open a champagne bottle.

May 27, 2009  11:32 AM ET

If we were in the late 80's or early 90's Lily and Pinella would have gone at by now in the clubhouse and Pinella would have definitely given him a lot more trouble than Gibbons did in Toronto.

Hey Chaser, This your first year following baseball? Your definition of mediocre pitcher is ignorant. Get off this site if you do not understand the very basics of the game. 17 and 15 wins last 2 years....hmmm.... Also if anyone saw this game you would understand the utter incompetence of Bob Davidson. He had no idea of the strike zone , for both teams, and his inconsistancy was embarassing.

whats a media?

May 27, 2009  01:18 PM ET

As far as inconsitency goes that is a MLB front office problem, you can not argue balls and strikes, period.
I also want the Umps to fade away, they are not to yell back or follow a player or coach to continue an argument. They make the calls, that is it.

Let me see, I used to know what a media was...

Lilly is an avergae pitcher and I was surpirsed when the Cubs signed him to big bucks a few years back. He's lucky he's in the National league. He'd get killed in the AL.

May 27, 2009  02:24 PM ET

Isn't Bob Davidson one of those dumb dumb umps that resigned and then begged/sued for his job back?
That goes to show how smart he is.

That just goes to show how smart he is.

Ball players are just prima donna's and think that they are better then the umps...The umps are graded on a higher scale then players and put up with too much crap from crappy players...

It's the cement strip that separates vehicle traffic. Duh!

This is why they should be able to settle it in a steele cage match like they do in the WWE

Right. It's the fault of the umpires. Not Lilly and definitely not that angel Bradley on your team.
