Youkilis incites Santana

06:28 AM ET 05.23 | Kevin Youkilis, intentionally or not, gave Johan Santana incentive last night in the fifth inning of the Mets' 5-3 victory at Fenway Park, where Santana had not pitched since September 2006, when he still played for the Twins. The Red Sox scored three runs against him, which is commendable given the 1.36 ERA with which he entered and the 1.50 ERA with which he exited. But Santana oppressed the Sox when it mattered most, owing partly, he said, to his showdown with Youkilis - which only Santana took as a showdown. Santana allowed two earned runs on seven hits and a walk. After he hit Youkilis with a pitch and briefly exchanged words with him, he allowed one hit and no runs while recording three of his eight strikeouts, earning his first win at Fenway since May 2, 2003.

Even as a diehard Sox fan I have to say Youk was crowding the plate big time and the ball was not even that far inside when it hit him. With Youkillis growing reputation as a big time hitter he's going to see more pitchers throwing inside so he better get use to it. It wasn't like Santana threw it at his head.

I was just thinking the same thing about the Yankees.

Agreed, Youkilis was crowding the plate, but can you blame him? Going into the game he was batting a meager .111 against Santana, and was doing what he could to get on base. Unfortunately, he woke up the beast that is Johan, and Santana proceeded to give up only two singles the rest of the game. I'm a Sox fan this weekend, and not as naive as the poster above me seems to be, the Mets are only a game and half out of first place. Let's go Bosox beat those Mets.

These Red Sox are touchy....I didn't realize they were ****!

I always had a great deal of respect for Youk and feel there's very few better hitters, much less clutch hitters in the game but he was a pink last night. That pitch was high but only an inch or two inside. What he did was classless. Guys like him and Jeter crowd the plate and will get hit. Take your base and shut up. Santana is not a head hunter.

The Mets have now made 9 or 10 errors behind Santana and in both of the games he lost he did not give up an earned run. It's like the Mets see him on the mound and decide they don't have to show up.

I kind of liked the 'pink.' You know, like another word for vag.

Freudian slip I guess.
The Mets are worse behind Santana then I thought. They've made 12 errors in his 9 starts. Pathetic. I would imagine the Yankees fans aren;t the only ones upset they didn't pull the trigger and get him

Just one problem with your otherwise brilliant analysis: Youkilis didn't say anything; Santana did. Youk just went to first base, wincing from the boo-boo on his elbow.

Youk is no pink.

...But he was swinging, his elbow just about into the strike zone. What ever happened to the rule that says you can't get first base if you swing into the pitch? What are they teaching umpires today?

May 23, 2009  11:30 AM ET

I don't think Youk was mad at all, he was looking at the mound and saying "damn that hurt" the ball came in and hit his unprotected elbow. Then Santana got all macho that's why Youk was laughing at 1st base.

Anyways.....this could be an interesting weekend between these two teams. Maybe not. The Big Pelf has kinda got that 'Forrest Gump' quality......

I always like when Joba hurls 100 mph heat at Youk's enormous head and Youk cries. Some guys just look like they need a beaning and Youk is one of them....

Yup, Youk crowds the plate and no he didn't say anything to Santana. Not sure why Santana was being a bitcch about it. Maybe he's just jealous that Youk will be playing baseball in the playoffs and he will be answering questions again about the Mets gakking another season away.
