Niedermayer has separated shoulder
The coach's hopes failed to materialize, but Devils' forward Rob Niedermayer is believed to be on the verge of returning from what The Post has learned is a shoulder separation. Unlikely to join the lineup this week, Niedermayer could start practicing with the team at its morning skate today, or more likely, in a Thanksgiving Day practice before the Devils visit Boston.

Ex-Lightning owner under investigation
Len Barrie is still listed in the Tampa Bay Lightning's media guide as a co-owner of the NHL team, but those close to the team say he is out of the picture. His financial problems with the Bear Mountain golf resort and housing development near Victoria were severe enough to scuttle his attempt to buy out fellow owner Oren Koules in late summer. Now it appears as if the problems will worsen. In the wake of a damning report by the company's former auditor that accused management at Bear Mountain of misappropriating funds, a source said Canada Revenue Agency is looking into the development's finances.

Former Habs suitor eyeing Coyotes
Montreal businessman Steve Stotland is leading a group of Phoenix-area investors who want to buy the NHL's Coyotes and keep the team in Glendale, Ariz. Stotland, part of a group that looked into buying the Montreal Canadiens when they were up for sale in 2000 and again this past spring, said he began pursuing the Coyotes after the team emerged from bankruptcy court and was sold to the NHL this month.

Why Habs traded problem child
The Canadiens traded one problem child for another yesterday, sending Guillaume Latendresse and his unfulfilled potential to the Minnesota Wild for Benoit Pouliot, who arrives in Montreal with even more unfulfilled potential. The trade came several hours after Canadiens head coach Jacques Martin and assistant coach Perry Pearn expressed their frustration over Latendresse's play. Pearn, who is known as a first-class teacher, took Latendresse by the shoulders during the Canadiens' practice yesterday morning at the Bell Sports Complex in Brossard and positioned him in front of the net in what was probably the last attempt to convince Latendresse that he had to take advantage of his size and his good hands.

Burke itching to make Leafs moves
Brian Burke has the go-ahead to send any Leafs player to the minors -- essentially burying National Hockey League contracts -- without clearing it with his bosses or the board of directors of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Ltd. And that could happen as soon as this week.
