Angels, Dodgers pursuing Halladay
The Angels have resumed their pursuit of pitcher Roy Halladay, the Toronto Blue Jays ace who would be an extremely attractive alternative to free-agent right-hander John Lackey, with whom the team continues to negotiate. The Dodgers also have inquired with the Blue Jays about Halladay.

Big obstacle to Twins re-signing Mauer
The biggest obstacle for the Minnesota Twins signing Joe Mauer to a contract extension rather than allowing him to become a free agent might not be salary but the enormous endorsement opportunities the all-star catcher, who was named the American League's MVP this afternoon, could get playing on the East Coast. Million-dollar endorsement deals, from Nike to Gatorade to automobiles to razors -- as New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has -- could be worth double and even triple what they would be playing in Minnesota.

Tigers taking offers for Cabrera
Opening bids for Curtis Granderson and Edwin Jackson have plainly been underwhelming, or Dave Dombrowski, the Tigers president and general manager known for a fast trigger-finger, would by now have dealt at least one of two star players on the block during what could be a volatile offseason for the Tigers. Nor has anything irresistible been offered for first baseman Miguel Cabrera, who might be as available as Granderson, Jackson, or seemingly any Tigers player as the team attempts to pare payroll and prepare for a fresh start heading into a new decade.

Yankees to cut down on spending
Brian Cashman won't meet with the Steinbrenner family until next week to discuss what the team's 2010 payroll is going to be, but regardless of what they tell him, he won't make the same splash he did a year ago. "We spent a lot of money last year," said Cashman, who dumped a combined $429 million on Mark Teixeira, CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte and watched the quartet play a big part in the Yankees winning the World Series. "We're not going to spend as much this year." But spend they will since there are holes in the rotation, outfield and at designated hitter.

Sheffield not ready to retire
Gary Sheffield's days with the Mets are likely numbered, but the 41-year-old is not ready to retire. Sheffield told the Boston Globe that he hopes to sign with a team this offseason and expects to hit "at least 25 and maybe up to 40 home runs." This seems a bit far-fetched for Sheffield after hitting 10 homers in 100 games and 268 at-bats for the power-starved, injury-depleted Mets last season
